    oslo.town blocks threads.net

Since Meta (the company that owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp) launched Threads as a rival to X/Twitter, there has been a healthy dose of scepticism from the fediverse community about Meta’s intentions, the company’s values and whether Threads joining the fediverse is a good thing or bad thing.

oslo.town is based on Mastodon, so it’s part of the fediverse and our position on Threads thus far was to remain open. On launch, Threads had not joined the fediverse and their implementation of this has been relatively slow. This means there was very little impact on oslo.town.

However, as of the time of writing, there is some form of federation between the two services. Your data moves from our servers to theirs and from theirs to ours. This means latest statements from the company about how they treat their users become more worrisome. The loosening of their moderation policies enables hate speech against the LGBT+ community to thrive – this is unacceptable.

In addition, it is unclear about how Threads would store and use the data it pulls from oslo.town. For example, Threads could soon start to monetise your content on their platform.

This week we used the Announcements feature on Mastodon to ask users of oslo.town if they wanted threads.net to be blocked or kept: of those who voted 92% voted to block threads.net, while 8% voted to keep the connection.

The results of the poll were very clear, so steps have been taken to block threads.net on oslo.town.

As the current admin of oslo.town, I agree with the majority poll result. Blocking Threads is best for us right now, and it matches the ideas behind the fediverse and Mastodon software.

    Merchandise

I recently added my little social network logo to Red Bubble – which means you can now buy a whole plethora of oslo.town merchandise.

oslo.town has recently topped 100 members and was never meant to be a big thing, so I’m quite happy with this. And, I’m not expecting to see people (other than myself) walking around the city wearing merch – but the option is there should you want to own some swag.

20% of all purchases go to running the site. The rest goes to production and distribution.

Red Bubble, almost laughably, will print on anything – so now you can pick up an oslo.town pin badge, iPhone case, backpack, wall clock, pillow and the classic t-shirt.

If you’re looking for an alternative to Twitter, you don’t need to look further than Mastodon. But, if you live or come from Scotland, then you might want to join your fellow country-folk on a social network for Scotland.

mastodon.scot is a bilingual online community, inviting Scottish folk to sign up and chat with the 1,500 other members of the site.

And, if you don’t know anyone on the site, you can always invite your friends or follow some of the 2 million people on the wider network – called the fediverse.

    A Mastodon instance

mastodon.scot is based on the same technology as the social network that I run for the people of Oslo — oslo.town. Both sites are able to ‘talk’ to one another and members of oslo.town are able to follow and interact with members of mastodon.scot.

If you want to get to grips with Mastodon, but don’t live in either Scotland or Oslo, check out some of the Mastodon instances you can join.
