I recently posted a music video for Video Games by Lana Del Rey. Since I totally love that song, I was keen to find out more about the artist in question and hunt down some more music.
It turns out that Lana Del Rey (aka Lizzy Grant, aka Lana Del Ray) was previously signed to 5 Points Records, a New York based label owned by David Nichtern. 5 Points released a three-track EP called Kill Kill under the name Lizzy Grant, a record of which can be found at archive.org and the MP3s of which, still hosted on the 5 Points Records website.
The track listing is as follows:
It’s interesting to note that these MP3 downloads were tagged with the name Lizzy Grant, but the album name ‘Nevada Master Ref 1’ and track numbers 1, 13 and 4 respectively. Around the same time, her official website lizzygrant.com, featured this biography:
Lizzy Grant was born on the day of Worldly Rapture. She is inspired by Caffeine, G-d, and David Lee Roth. She spent two years as a trapese artist in a southern California circus. She’s been married four times in 5 countries. Having shared the stage with such acts as Mirah, The Blow, and John Mayer, it’s no surprise that she’s one of the most sought after and intriguing acts to have errupted on the New York music scene. A regular friend and influence on the downtown crowd, Lizzy Grant has been named the unofficial sweetheart by hipster musicologists everywhere. A winner of the Williamsburg Live Songwriting Contest, and notorious femme fatale, she’s sweeter than yo mama’s apple pie
Prior to this, the webpage redirected to the MySpace of The Rich Whores, a band fronted by Lizzy and signed to 5 Points also.
Meanwhile, on Amazon (US), you can find a full album by the artist ‘Lana Del Ray’ (notice the different spelling of ‘Rey’), the track listing of which takes the same form as the previously mentioned ‘Nevada’ master:
- Kill Kill (3:57)
- Queen Of The Gas Station (3:04)
- Oh Say Can You See (3:40)
- Gramma (Blue Ribbon Sparkler Trailer Heaven) (3:55)
- For K Part 2 (3:24)
- Jump (2:51)
- Mermaid Motel (3:59)
- Raise Me Up (Mississippi South) (4:22)
- Pawn Shop Blues (3:26)
- Brite Lites (2:58)
- Put Me In A Movie (3:13
- Smarty (2:49)
- Yayo (5:45)
It seems Lana Del Rey has been snapped up by another (major) label who intend to launch this properly - hence the name changes and the disappearance of the current catalog. She’s also working with PR firm Anorak London (formerly Scruffy Bird PR). A quick look at the sharp listener increase from Last.fm and a recent post on the rapidly growing Facebook fan page probably confirms that too:

From Facebook:
Releasing Video Games & Blue Jeans on October 9 - Digitally and on Limited Edition Picture Disk Vinyl. Video for ‘Blue Jeans’ coming next week. Luv u - Thinking of u XXX LDR
Look out for pre-orders of this. In the meantime, here’s some extra songs, remixes, etc. that I’ve legally found online:
I should get out more.
PS: Whilst researching this, I found a cool music blog called All Over. You should check it out.
